India has emphasized the necessity of maintaining peace and harmony along its border with China as a pivotal factor for enhancing bilateral relations. This comes after a significant meeting between India’s National Security Adviser, Ajit Doval, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. The meeting was part of the 25th round of discussions between the two nations’ special representatives, focusing on the protracted boundary dispute. Both sides concentrated on progressing with boundary delimitation, enhancing border management, and broadening cooperation across their shared frontier.
The talks provided an opportunity for both countries to reflect positively on the progress in their bilateral relationship and discuss strategies to ensure stability along the Line of Actual Control. India and China reiterated their dedication to achieving a political resolution to the boundary issue, aligned with their long-term strategic interests. These discussions build upon the advancements made since the 2024 agreement between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which aimed to mitigate tensions in the Ladakh region. As a result, activities such as people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and cross-border trade through specified routes have been reinstated.
National Security Adviser Doval noted that the normalization of bilateral ties is closely linked to sustaining peace along the border. Meanwhile, the Chinese delegation expressed that the boundary issue should be contextualized appropriately within the broader spectrum of bilateral relations. Despite the constructive dialogue, both parties refrained from disclosing substantial details concerning the actual demarcation of the disputed boundary. The consensus was to continue the negotiations, with the next round of special representative talks scheduled to occur in India in 2027.
The timing of these discussions is particularly significant as they precede the anticipated visit of President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September. This forthcoming event underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to stabilize and further strengthen the bilateral ties between the two nations. With both countries agreeing to persist in their dialogue and negotiations, the focus remains on fostering a peaceful and cooperative relationship that benefits both sides.
