Tensions between Iran and the United States have prompted calls for renewed diplomatic dialogue, highlighted by recent discussions in Beijing. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, to advocate for restraint and a return to negotiations as a means to resolve the ongoing conflict.
During the talks, Wang emphasized that the continued hostility between Washington and Tehran is detrimental not only to the countries involved but also to the international community at large. He underscored the importance of adhering to existing agreements and called for the re-establishment of a negotiation process based on prior understandings.
A key issue addressed in the meeting was the status of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy supplies and supply chains. Wang urged for its reopening and the safeguarding of international shipping routes, stressing the need for stability in this region to maintain economic and energy security worldwide.
Wang also highlighted the importance of preventing regional tensions from escalating into areas such as Yemen and the Red Sea, advocating for disputes to be resolved through dialogue and negotiations. Araghchi, representing Iran, echoed the sentiment of seeking diplomatic solutions, affirming that Iran does not wish for the conflict to continue and is open to collaborative efforts to enhance regional security.
Expressing support for China’s peace and security proposals in the Middle East, Araghchi indicated Tehran’s willingness to deepen its cooperation with Beijing. He reiterated Iran’s commitment to the existing memorandum with the United States and its readiness to engage with regional countries to improve relations.
