President Donald Trump projected a wave of optimism regarding the contentious trade relationship with China, stating, “I think we’re going to be fine with China.”
This hopeful outlook comes as he confirmed a high-stakes meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is set for two weeks from now. Trump credited his personal rapport for his optimism: “I get along great with him [Xi].”
However, this optimism is complicated by Trump’s own admission that his core policy—high tariffs—is “not sustainable.” He insisted this was a policy China “forced” upon him.
The president also tempered his hope with caution, warning that “China is always looking for an edge” and adding, “I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
The meeting, expected at the APEC summit, is critical. A 90-day trade truce expires on November 10, and Trump is pushing for a “fair deal” to prevent the trade war from re-escalating.
