China is set to broaden its import portfolio during its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), focusing on advanced technology, crucial industrial components, energy resources, and superior agricultural products. This initiative, announced by the General Administration of Customs, aims to enhance industrial modernization, stimulate domestic consumption, and provide Chinese consumers with a diverse range of quality products from across the globe. In addition, China plans to expand the variety of countries from which it imports.
In the first half of the year, China experienced double-digit growth in both imports and exports, with import growth surpassing that of exports due to escalating domestic demand for advanced equipment, technology, and consumer goods. The country is committed to increasing market access for foreign agricultural and food products while simplifying quarantine and import approval processes. Since the beginning of the year, China has granted market access for 264 categories of agricultural and food products from 79 new countries, with imported food now arriving from more than 150 countries and regions.
Experts in China view this strategy as a testament to the country’s dedication to greater market openness, diversified trade, and enhanced global economic cooperation. They believe that boosting imports will not only satisfy the demand for industrial upgrades and higher-quality consumer goods but also create fresh opportunities for international exporters.
With its consumer market continuing to expand, China anticipates that this growth will provide increased opportunities for global businesses. As domestic consumption rises, international companies are expected to benefit from the growing demand within the Chinese market.
